Never is there a day that can't be made better with pizza. I found out today that I will be the lead role in a professional opera company upcoming production' what better way to celebrate than with pizza and hard cider? I wanted lots of crust and sausage, so I thought a deep dish sweet peppers and sausage pizza would be the ticket. Serve it with a green salad and a glass of wine, and maybe some too loud singing for celebratory purposes, and enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 pound pizza dough
1/2 pound Italian sweet sausage, crumbled
1 clove garlic, minced
8 ounces marinara sauce
1 bell pepper, diced
2 ounces fontina cheese, shredded
salt, pepper, olive oil
Method:
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Lightly oil a cast iron skillet and press the room temperature dough into the base.
Meanwhile, in another skillet over medium high heat, add the sausage. Cook until browned and cooked through. Add the sliced garlic and diced bell pepper and cook for 5 minutes, until the bell peppers are softened and the garlic is fragrant. Salt and pepper to taste. Remove to a bowl.
Spread the marinara sauce over the dough, leaving a 1/2 inch border around. Scatter over the sausage and pepper mic, then sprinkled over with fontina cheese. Bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and the dough is golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Allow the pizza to rest 5 minutes before slicing and enjoying!
